The short version
- ✔FileCategorizer collects no personal data. There are no accounts, no analytics and no tracking.
- ✔All AI work happens on your own computer. Your files, photos, documents and questions are never sent to us or to anyone else.
- ✔The only internet use is the one-time download of the AI models, and the purchase through the app store.
Who we are
FileCategorizer is developed and published by cebas Visual Technology Inc., 2202A–4464 Markham Street, Victoria, BC V8Z 7X8, Canada. Questions about privacy: support@filecategorizer.com.
What the app does with your files
FileCategorizer only looks at the folders you choose. On the Mac, the system asks you before it allows access to a folder. For the files it reads, the app builds an index (descriptions, tags, text found in images and documents, dates, camera data) and keeps it in the vault folder you picked at setup, on your own computer or on a drive you own. The vault is separate from the app.
The AI models run in a local engine inside the app. The engine only listens on your own computer (localhost) and has no connection to us.
Nothing in your folders is changed, moved or deleted unless you create an action and run it. Every action can be previewed first. Backups are written only to the folder you choose.
What goes over the internet
- AI model download. At the first start, the app downloads the AI models from the public registry of the open-source AI engine it uses. As with any download, the server that provides the files can see your IP address and which model you asked for. We do not operate that server and we receive no information from it.
- Your purchase. Buying, restoring or trying the app is handled by the Apple App Store or the Microsoft Store. They process your payment and your account. We never see your payment details. The stores tell us that a purchase happened and give us sales reports, but never your files or your questions.
The app has no analytics, no advertising, no crash reporting and no tracking. We have no servers that receive data from the app.
What stays on your computer
- Your vault (the index and your settings) in the folder you picked.
- The AI models next to it.
- On the Mac, a small log file in the app's own folder (events, folder paths and error messages, never the contents of your files). It is never sent anywhere. You can open it in the app (Settings, Show log in Finder), and send it to us only if you choose to, for example to get help.
- Your trial start date and purchase status, in the system's keychain on the Mac.
Optional permissions
If you want FileCategorizer to read your Photos Library on the Mac, macOS requires the folder permission and, for the library itself, Full Disk Access. Both are optional, granted by you in the system settings, and you can withdraw them there at any time.
Your control
You can stop at any time. To remove everything the app has stored, delete the app and delete your vault folder. Because the data never leaves your computer, there is nothing for us to delete on our side.
Children
FileCategorizer does not collect personal data from anyone, including children.
App stores, license and terms
FileCategorizer is sold through third-party stores. Products sold through the Apple App Store follow Apple's rules and guidelines, including Apple's standard license agreement for apps, and purchases, refunds and subscriptions are handled by Apple. Products sold through the Microsoft Store follow Microsoft's terms, and purchases and refunds are handled by Microsoft. The privacy policies of those stores apply to what you do in their stores. We have no separate terms of sale for the app.
